Because their employers choose to pay them a lot.
And since professional sports teams are privately owned, their owners can pay them whatever they want.
Also people have to realize athletes generate revenue for teams...buy aiding in jersey sales, ticket sales, other misc item sales.
For every $100 a player gets paid, they in turn might be earning team, city, venders $1000.00 or more...TV revenue. Owners pay athletes depending on their value to the team, not only in winning, but in fan interest.
The more a player gets paid, that means they're earing back many times more than their paycheck...and owners pay them a lot so another team won't attract them.
Unlike Government workers...who get paid by tax payer money...athletes get paid by private corporations.
So their owners have the right to pay them whatever they want.
So other than snickering about it...there's nothing anyone can do about it.
And can't compare military pay (tax money) to athlete pay...private money....
Of course military people should get paid more...that's for the Government to decide...but the Government in no way shape or form controls the high pay of athletes...

Unlike most other dopey so called sports show host, I think college athletes getting paid will actually increase player quality at the University level, here's why 1. If a college athlete and already getting paid more money than you need, based on your performance, cause ultamitely it comes down to performance, but if in college, getting paid by some company, than why would you want to leave college and rush to the NBA? Cause in college you're young, around 'women' your same age, life is easy, life is fun, as such I think this will detour many college athletes, at least Basketball ones, maybe some football ones, from jumping up into the NBA after just one year. 2. Again, ultimately it comes down to performance, the better one performs, the more popular they are on social media, the more money they can potentially earn from sponsor, as such I think this will make collegiate athletes play even better. And that's pretty much it, dern I wish I were in college during this time, hell I'd even pic up Ping Pong, if it meant I could get a sponsor.
