Notice there is no follow up story about Jasin Collins, the NBA player who announced he was gay...
Well after his 15 minutes media spotlight...where has he gone?
When you mention his name now, all you hear is silence and crickets chirping...
It's as if he's totally vanished off the face of the earth.
Let that be a lesson learned.
All announcing he was gay did was give him 15 minutes in the lime light (on top of a dull NBA career), and the rest of his life to be stigmatized behind the scenes.
My point being, being gay, or ones orientation alone, is not enough to keep the public or media interested in you...you have to have other interesting character traits, or skills or personality, in order to stay in the lime light...and Jasin Collins as about as dull as they come.
It's like you have to already be a 'Star' or celebrated for something, for being 'gay' to have meaning on top of that.
But if you have a dull, flat, normal personality, and nothing that stands out about yourself as a NBA player...you soon return to obscurity days after announcing you're 'gay'...
No endorcements, no speeches, nothing, nada...just silently ignored...even more so now that those in the association no...
It's just how society is, no one really cares that you're gay, unless you have something extra to offer on top of that...like winning championships, or having a disruptive personality like Rodman did.
But Jason Collins proves that just being gay alone, is not enough to keep the public interested.
But good for him if he feels healthier and cleaner for coming out with it, I just hope he didn't think it was going to some how boost his career or value to the NBA...cause it certainly hasn't...
Infact I think he got dropped by the Celtics..or contract ended...so he's a free agent.
Until then, we'll have to wait till next season to see if he's picked up by another team.
Career wise, it would of made more sense for him to go through the summer, get signed by another team, and then announced he was 'gay'...at the beginning of the season...that would of made more sense...
Instead he announced he was gay, at end of season, end of contract where everyone has already forgotten about him, moved on, and don't care anymore...
Bad career move on his part.
And if he can't get back into the NBA...people will care even less about is orientation...and be like 'just go away'...
