The thing that always gets me about old style 90's, mainly West coast rap, is how so much pain is expressed through calm, jazz like melody.
Early rap always had a jazz like, melody/harmony flow to it, that if you deleted the lyrics, it would almost sound like church music or elevator music or soft jazz.
The lyrics contrast the smooth musical flow...that's something earlier rappers always incorporated into their songs.
You had hard lyrics, and a soft jazzy musical score in the background.
That style is no longer prevalent in modern mainstream rap.
Now you have hard lyrics mixed in with hard sound.
50 cent was one of the last top 40 billboard rappers to incorporate hard lyrics with soft instrumental back drop...partly cause he got lot's of his beats from Dre, who of course was one of the originators of West coast G rap.

The longer I live, experience life, people, others, the more I realize everyones a gangster, no matter how clean they look on the outside.
I've been ripped off by business types in suits, who are managers of businesses ect.
Gangsters appeal to people on a certain level, why?...cause they're honest about who they are, where as others are not.
