Northerner's, during the civil war, did not fight that war solely to free the African slaves, rather the slaves being freed was a consequence of the North winning It annoys me to know end when I hear conservative radio hosts always tell their listeners that 'white' northerners, from the civil war, specifically went into battle, left behind all they had, risked injury and death, simply to free the 'negro slaves'.
No, rather the slaves being set free was a consequence of them winning the war, but it was not what each Northern (equally as racist towards black slaves as the south was) soldier had in heart for being the sole purpose of fighting the war.
If so, than all racism up north, after the war, simply would not have been there.
I challenge any one to find a journal, written from a white solder back then, who wrote down how proud they were to go to war to free the slaves.
And actually, I think worse than slavery, was the racism that was spawned because of it, the racism that was spawned from slavery was more insidious than slavery itself...more corrosive to society and dangerous to the slaves, cause that racism which was spawned from slavery is what set the tone for decades and decades after slavery ended.
By the time slavery had ended, 99% of all whites basically thought black citizens were simply inferior to them in all ways, and that that's how 'god' intended it to be.
Didn't matter if a Republican or Democrat or Atheist back then, if white, one was simply trained, taught, that 'negros', were an inferior ethnicity of man.
Yes, other nations had slavery, but their slavery wasn't predicated Soley on 'race', or ethnic traits.
When Europeans enslaved other Europeans, one could buy or earn their freedom and then
blend right back into society, whereas a freed African slave could not do that.
A freed African slave was cursed to be seen as inferior all and the rest of their life by the white society they existed in, and of course history bares that out.

Most people today, whether white or black or anything else, could not survive one day of slavery in the hot fields of Goergia, with knats and insects biting all day long, sticky, hot, sweating, no proper foot wear.
Non of us could survive it.
I remember years ago while driving a truck, when to a watermelon farm in Goergia, it was hot, sticky, and biting knats everywhere.
The labor there, they weren't slaves (South Americans), but still, I don't understand how they could bare those working conditions, I would of rather stayed in my home nation than to migrate to U.S. just to get stuck in some field from sun up to sun down.
But in the South East that's pretty much all you see working in the groves, the fields, the diary farms are South American migrants.
I've never seen a black or white person or Asian person, working on those farms....maybe once in Florida I did.
