A comparison must be done between these two movies.
Evil Dead 1981 was, is, as much of a horror classic as the 'Exorcist' and or 'Carrie' and or 'The Shining'...
I was uncomfortable with the re-make...cause I know how todays writers, producers, directors think and operate...which is big studio, formula, and somewhat predictable...
Round by round here are some of my comparisons, and how both movies faired with each other...
Opening sequence...
1. Evil Dead 2013, during the opening sequence...I thought I had rented the wrong movie...there was nothing in the opening sequence that linked it to the original 1981 premise.
2. Evil Dead 1981, during opening sequence...from the minute the move started, I was captivated...the silence of watching that old station wagon drive along that rural, forest, mountain road still sticks with me.
Round 1 goes to Evil Dead 1981
1. Evil Dead 2013 Characters seem like generic modern horror genre types...bombshell babes paired with Microsoft nerdy geeky type males...although one difference is there's a woman of color in the cast.
2. Evil Dead 1981 Characters...each and every character in Evil Dead 1981 was distinct and different from the other...their personalities didn't 'blur' together, as with ED 2013.
The Characters in Evil Dead 1981 just felt more authentic...more small town, rural and authentic which made what they went through a bit more believable...
Round two goes to Evil Dead 1981...
1. Musical score: Evil Dead 2013...Nothing spoils a horror movie for me more than overly aggressive formulated studio 'scary music'...music cannot make up for a bad plot or premise.
Evil Dead 2013 kind of relies on formulated big budget 'gotcha' music to stir or manipulate your emotions.
2. Musical score: Evil Dead 1981...The original Evil Dead opens with silence....brilliant...no music, nothing but silence...all you can hear is the tires rolling over gravel and twigs...
Again...Evil Dead 1981 really set a haunting tone from the minute film began...they didn't rely on statistical data from marketing agencies to tell them what scares people...they just went with what 'scares people'...followed their own instincts...and is why it works, worked.
In Evil Dead 1981, the car full of passengers, winds it's way up mountainous road and pulls up to cabin with no sound...other than twigs snapping underneath tires, like a dream you would have or something...again brilliant on their part...they set the demonic, haunted tone immediately.
Round 3 goes to Evil Dead 1981...
More rounds and comparisons to follow...so far Evil Dead 1981 is ahead 3-0...
